With Barcamp Blackpool fast approaching, we spent the morning preparing hardware required for the event.

In this case, the hardware is a small ‘thin client’ box made by Igel, and has an Via Eden processor which is X86 compatible. The Via Eden and the via graphics chip that accompanies it is quite low powered, and in a normal use scenario would utilise the power of the server it attaches to.
We have demonstrated a set up like this in the past, with a P3 600MHz laptop network booting from K12 LTSP (linux terminal server project), and running Fedora.
However, in this case, we want the Igel to run it’s own OS, and have been experimenting with various options.
Last week, I demonstrated the Igel running Debian, but it was very slow, with the processor continually maxing out. Tony has experimented with other distros, and found similar results.
The answer was the tiny distros, built for low specification hardware. Puppy, Dsl, and Tinycore.
This week, we installed Wary Puppy 5.3.
Choosing the Xvesa video option instead of the Xorg option during set up got around the graphics problems that had been ‘dogging’ Tony.
Speed in use was acceptable, so we moved on and added a Belkin wireless dongle using NdisWrapper to install the windows driver for the dongle. Eventually, this worked perfectly.
I say eventually, because the first two dongles we tried would not work, but that was because they turned out to be faulty!
There will be multiple Igels deployed at Barcamp, so the next step is to get several working together.
